From Hill Country to High Desert: An Intimate Marfa Wedding at Calera Chapel

Debby Ledet

July 7, 2025

When the Mercer’s first started planning their wedding, they imagined a celebration in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. But as the process unfolded, they realized something deeper: what they truly wanted wasn’t a big event, it was an intentional, relaxed weekend surrounded by the people who meant the most. So they pivoted. And that pivot led them to Marfa, Texas.

Nestled in the high desert with its artsy soul and peaceful landscape, Marfa was the perfect backdrop for a wedding that felt effortlessly true to who they are.

The couple got ready in town, soaking in the quiet energy of the space before heading to their ceremony at the dreamy Calera Chapel, a charming white-stucco chapel that feels like it’s frozen in time, in the best way.

Surrounded by their closest family and friends, T+C exchanged vows in a ceremony that felt intimate, sacred, and full of heart. The West Texas light poured in through the chapel windows, casting the kind of glow you can’t replicate anywhere else.

Afterward, everyone returned to The iconic Hotel Paisano, to celebrate under the desert sky. The reception was laid-back and joyful, with toasts that brought both tears and laughter, and a dance floor that stayed full well into the night. Every detail was intentionally chosen and nothing felt overdone, but everything felt like them.

As a wedding photographer, I love when couples follow their gut and plan something that reflects their spirit. The Mercer’s wedding weekend wasn’t just beautiful, it was real. And that made it unforgettable.
